This article in a nutshell states:

  • System requirements for MikuMikuDance

MikuMikuDance does not have a determined barebones system requirements, however, it is fairly safe to say that it would require at least a Pentium 4 (Socket 468).

Minimum System Requirements[]

Processor: Pentium 4 class processor (at least socket 468)
Ram: At least 512mb
Video: At least Nvidia Geforce FX 5500
DirectX: DirectX 9.
Sound: Any soundcard.
OS: Windows XP 32-bit*
Due to Windows XP no longer being a supported operating system, it is not recommended to use Windows XP anymore, unless for special reasons.

Optimum System Requirements[]

Processor: Any recent processor, as far back as a Pentium Dual Core. Multicore preferred especially if doing renderings.
Ram: At least 2gb. More will be required for multiple models in a project.
Video: Geforce 8XXX series or better.
DirectX: If DirectX10 or better is available, use it. Else, DirectX 9 should suffice.
Sound: Any High-Definition soundcard.
OS: Windows 7 64-bit (any edition) or more recent.

Use the 64-bit variant for heavy-duty tasks in MikuMikuDance.

Operating System Requirements[]

This program is written for Microsoft Windows operating system. It is unknown if the program runs on Windows 98; however, it will run on any NT-based operating systems, regardless of architecture. (32 or 64 bit; Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 etc). 64-bit versions of MikuMikuDance requires a 64-bit operating system, and will not run below Windows XP 64-bit; however 32-bit versions of MikuMikuDance will work regardless of architecture.

MMD is a 3D program. It should work in a virtual machine if you have done all the required procedures to enable 3D. Though problems are encountered with Oracle VM VirtualBox, other emulators have not been tested yet.

The latest version of MikuMikuDance (v7.39) has been tested to run under a 64-bit Linux system using the latest version of wine1.3; however, there are many bugs, and Wine currently has extremely limited DirectX support. MikuMIkuDance v5.24 can also run on 32-bit linux on wine1.4.

It should theoretically work with a Bootcamp-based environment, however, video processing may become an issue, due to Macintosh-based hardware supposedly not having enough video processing power.
